The horned parakeet: successfully protected and saved

The horned parakeet (Eunymphicus cornutus) is an unusual species of parrot native to New Caledonia. Thanks to the efforts of Loro Parque Fundación (LPF) and Versele-Laga, this species has been given a second chance.

From critically endangered to vulnerable

The horned parakeet was once on the brink of extinction. Thanks to LPF's efforts, the species is now listed as 'Vulnerable' by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). This is a significant improvement, but there is still work to be done to further increase the population.

Features

Medium-sized parrot: 32 cm
Average weight : 140 grams
A wide variety of nuts and seeds.
They nest in hollow trees, sometimes on the ground under rocks or fallen trees. This makes them vulnerable to predators such as rats and domestic cats.
The humid forests of New Caledonia (an island east of Australia).
A striking feature is its elongated head feathers, which give this species a unique appearance. Males and females are very similar, although females are slightly smaller.

Threats

The wild population of horned parakeets is estimated to be between 5,000 and 6,000 individuals. This small population makes the species vulnerable to changes in the ecosystem.
However, there is still little scientific information on the ecology and threats to this species. This data is essential for effective conservation. The LPF is therefore committed to researching the factors affecting horned parrot populations, such as habitat loss, predation by introduced mammals and climatic factors.

Thanks to LPF's actions, such as controlling introduced predators, the horned parakeets now have a better chance of survival.

Loro Parque Fundación: saving the Cuban Amazon

In captivity, horned parakeets are rare and only suitable for experienced keepers. They can live to an advanced age, but males can be aggressive towards females.

At Loro Parque Fundación, the world's largest genetic reserve for parrots, horned parakeets breed regularly. Visitors can see these special birds at the Loro Parque Animal Embassy.
